25 Years Later: The Rakesh Sharma Interview
Friday, April 3, 2009 marks the 25-year anniversary of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma's pathbreaking journey into space. In an exclusive interview, he spoke with Indipepal about the occasion, what he's up to currently, and his thoughts on the Indian space program.
Twenty-five years ago, squadron leader Rakesh Sharma of the Indian Air Force became the country's first citizen to go into space. The journey leading up to that mission is largely unknown. Indipepal brings you the behind-the-scenes story leading up to that historic mission.
In the 25 years since Rakesh Sharma's pathbreaking mission, ISRO the world's only space program that wasn't started for military purposes, has made great strides in space, and surprisingly, several other fields as well.
Though ISRO has made tremendous progress in the last decade, the organisation still has a long way to go to be considered in the same league as space giants USA, China, Russia, and the European Union.
