Spreading Love: Mekhala Lobo, 26, founder and CEO of Dateyourpet.co.in

Dating for dogs isn't very different from dating for humans. When the two dogs get set up on a date, they hope it ends in sex. And then there are times when one pooch may reject the other, but they still remain good friends. The psyche of a dog is fascinating; even though I don't own one, the canine world has always intrigued me.

That's probably why I started a dating and mating site for dogs. Aside from the fact that my MBA course came with an insight into business models, it also inspired me to be an entrepreneur.

Brute All Mighty

It all started, like most great ideas do, in the company of good friends. I was sitting on the building porch with my friend Stanley (who shares my passion for dogs, and the yearning for a pet) when we were joined by Trishika, a friend who to our envy, owned a beautiful Labrador named Brute. Every conversation we had that evening somehow kept leading back to the fact that Brute didn't have a mate. This fat Labrador was like the proverbial Newton Apple. Brute hit us on the head, and we yelled Eureka! How about a dating and mating portal for pets?

Dog Eat Dog World
I didn't waste much time in combining my research and management skills to put together a core team of professionals. Next on the agenda was to check out the competition. We went through a ton of canine sites and realised that no one in India was offering the dating and mating aspect, which would serve as our USP. Getting a team of experts - a vet, a dog trainer/behavioural psychoanalyst and a vet gynecologist - was what we then pursued. A whole lot of brainstorming and hard work later, we launched Date Your Pet in April this year.

Expansion Plans
We have now built a database with different breeds of dogs registered on it. We have started off with Mumbai, and hope to reach out to pooches and their owners in India's top eight cities within the next six months.
